Lubec, Maine & Africa???

Lubec, Maine & Africa???

Our next stop was the Schoodic Peninsula, part of Acadia National Park, where we stayed at the Schoodic Woods Campground. Stargazer gives SWG a big thumbs up—very private and directly connected to numerous hiking trails. Unfortunately, Stargazer was too long to navigate the Schoodic Peninsula Loop.

Greg hiked the 6.2-mile Buck Cove Mountain Trail, which features a spectacular panoramic view of the peninsula. It was a beautiful Sunday, and the trail was busy with fellow hikers enjoying the day.

After a great night’s rest, we headed north. Our first stop was the Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge, where we hiked the Hollingsworth Trail—more rugged than we expected, but well worth it. The views of the Maine coastline and Petit Manan Island, where Melinda hopes to return with Jane and Kathy to see the Atlantic Puffins, were truly spectacular.

Next, we made a quick stop at Walgreens to pick up medication Greg had forgotten back in Jackson and to restock Stargazer. From there, we headed to our next resting spot—Sunset Point RV Park in Lubec, ME, the easternmost municipality in the contiguous U.S. and the country’s closest continental point to Africa. The evening’s sunset was absolutely breathtaking!

Today in Lubec we visited the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and hiked the Coast Guard Trail, which winds along a rugged yet beautiful stretch of coastline. From there, we crossed the U.S.–Canada border for the first time— overall an easy process, though U.S. Border Patrol did conduct a Stargazer search. Our destination was FDR’s Campobello, where we toured his 34-room cottage and discovered fascinating details about both Franklin and Eleanor. It was here that FDR was diagnosed with polio, and after that, Eleanor returned every summer, keeping her connection to Campobello alive.

Tomorrow we’ll cross the border into Canada and continue our rambling journey to Cape Breton.

  1. Hello Greg & Melinda, What beautiful weather you’re having for this amazing trip! I love Schoonic… such a beautiful and peaceful place. You’ll have to tell me more about Campobello when you return… it’s on my short list, as is the ride up to explore Canada after. Take lots of photos while enjoying our friendly
    neighbors to the north. 🙂

  2. wow… y’all are getting everythin in! sounds fabulous, fun and interesting!
i love readin the blog and seeing all the pictures…
    keep it up!

  3. Felt like we were there to with you, reliving the path of our “one” RV trip. Sunset Point RV Park ( the best recommendation we received), Quoddy Head lighthouse, and Campobello, where I played the piano.
Thanks for sharing your journey. Stay well.
