Dust in the Wind

Dust in the Wind

After a final photo shoot, we left Tracy and Eric and headed to Utah. Along the way we traveled through Rio Grande National Forest, over Wolf Creek Pass (where we practiced downshifting), through Durango, and into Moab. Upon arriving in Moab we learned it was the beginning of the Moab Jeep Rally 2023!

Our first day in Moab we were up early and headed to Dead Horse Point State Park where Melinda and I took a six mile hike following the Rim Trail highlighted by Dead Horse Point Overlook. I kept a close eye on Melinda and did not lose her over a cliff, to a rogue coyote, or a meandering trail. Otto had a great hike, especially finding the prickliest trees to poop on, leaving me the challenge of cleaning up behind him.

After our hike we headed to Canyonlands National Park where we hiked another two miles in and out to Grand View Point. For the day Melinda hiked over 8 miles! The Canyonland views were spectacular and we met a couple from Minnesota who were traveling in a teardrop and hopefully will visit us in the fall for leaf season. We are VERY HAPPY we chose a Navion instead of a teardrop!

Dead Horse Point State Park had one last spot for a RV, so we changed our plans and hooked up in Site 21 where we had some beer and wine and celebrated the sunset. Before falling off to a well deserved sleep, we finished watched Shrinking with Jason Segel, Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams. Great show for the road.

The next morning Otto and I hiked out to the Big Horn Overlook where we experienced some heart pumping ledges and incredible morning views. Soon the winds picked up and there was plenty of dust in the wind. We headed back to our Moab RV Suite, but first hiked up to the Wilson Arch and visited the Hole N” The Rock 15-room house built by Albert and Gladys Christensen between 1932-1952. I had a Moses Brown 50th Reunion Planning Call and then we headed into town for frozen yogurt, art stores, and most important a quilt store.

Moab was pretty busy, so our night at Dead Horse Point State Park was our best. We are now heading to Boulder, UT to hang with Susan Malkin and Jay Kelly. Hopefully we do not get blown off the road on our way!

  1. Impressive hiking Melinda! Maybe your lost wandering at Crestone was mainly training for your upcoming hikes – way to go! Love the pic of basking in the sunset with beer in hand. Enjoy!

  2. Pictures are amazing. Ann and I are so glad to hear that Melinda is handling the hiking so well. Take care. can’t wait to catch up with you guys. Greg and Ann

  3. I love reading about your travels. It makes us want to get on the road and explore, but since we can’t do that at this time, we’ll just make the trip through your eyes. Hope you’re getting a few national parks marked off on your mug as you go. Safe travels!
