Blowing in the Wind – Bob Dylan

Blowing in the Wind – Bob Dylan

We had traveled to Gallup, NM so we could visit the Chaco Culture National Historic Park, but learned from our RV Park Hosts that the roads were not passable for a Class C RV. So instead we visited El Morro National Monument featuring 2,000 signatures carved into sandstone dating back to ancient Pueblo times. We hiked up to the top of El Morro where we explored a pueblo that once housed over 1,500 people.

From El Morro we traveled past Albuquerque and Santa Fe and spent the night at a four site RV campground overlooking a range with buffalo. The following day was a long drive to Guymon, OK where we stayed at the Corral Drive-In Campground a) with an old Drive-In Theater and b) a wizard who fixed our side-door step that had stopped working. BTW: We rate campgrounds by a) space (how tight are we packed in) and b) bathrooms/showers – Corral Drive-In Campground gets an A+.

Next a long drive to Salina, KS where along the way we received Tornado Alerts. The winds were blowing and the skies menacing. We stopped by the Santa Fe Trail Museum in Latham, KS where a) we got great advice on waiting out and navigating tornados and b) visited the Museum which for the small town (population 100) was incredible. We made it safely to Salina!

Today has been a BONUS DAY. We traveled to Manhattan, Kansas, the original home town/office of the Learning Resources Network (LERN), stopping first at the University of Man (UFM), one of the leading community education programs when we first got involved in community education. We visited UFM to attend a Quaker Meeting, but unfortunately no one else was there! Next we connected with LERN staff member, Gale Hughes, who Greg has worked with for 20+ years, and her husband Paul for a day of catching up and an incredible Mexican dinner.

BTW: Stargazer now has a dead headlight that we hope to get fixed before heading to Hamilton, MO for a day of quilt stores and expert quilters!

  1. Wow. What an adventure you two make of every day! Love your updates so much. Thank you!

  2. Nice post, once again. I can’t believe that we missed El Morro when in NM last October. I wonder if the pueblo you describe is the basis for a pueblo described in detail in Death Comes to the Archbishop by Willa Cather. You both might enjoy reading this while NM is fresh in your minds. Safe travels and I hope you have all the repairs behind you.

  3. It’s been fun to follow a map as you describe your route! Seems like Stargazer has been another character on this journey. Hope you don’t run into more tornados as you head home. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  4. Suddenly the national weather forecast has meaning to me! Yikes! I hate to think of you waiting out a tornado in an RV, even one as noble as Stargazer!

  5. sheeesh guys…one adventure after another! it all sounds amazing and fun, and not w/o challenge! what a time for collecting stories! so glad you got advice about “what to do about tournedos”
    time to head home soon🥳

  6. How fun that you enjoyed Manhattan! We are having a fascinating time exploring Lisbon and slogging through jet lag each morning. Again, sorry to miss you on your great trip. Hang in there Stargazer!

  7. And on May Day you are probably riding a tornado somewhere in the plains – you’re becoming legends like Paul Bunyan or Johnnie Appleseed or John Henry!
    Keep on truckin’!
