Travels with Stargazer

Early Wednesday, March 20th, Stargazer heads back out on the road. Melinda, Otto and I will be traveling to Texas, California, Utah, Colorado and back to New Hampshire, arriving back May 8th. Our trip last fall to Lake Champlain, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and home through Maine was memorable and included lots of bike riding. After almost three weeks of no rain, the rains returned. We arrived in Maine to sprinkles but learned that storms were brewing, so we made the decision to head back to Jackson – arriving late Friday afternoon just as the rains began to fall. One of Melinda’s bucket list items is meeting a moose face-to-face and up close and personal. On our last day in Canada, we did see a moose by the side of the road, but before Melinda could hop out of the car and hug the moose, the moose was gone. For what it’s worth here are a few random thoughts from the road: Random Thought #1: Potatoes. The week we were in PEI was prime potato harvesting season. The number of potato trucks (and I am search of a toy potato truck to give Ralph for Christmas) we saw and passed was incredible. Each year approximately 2.5 billion pounds of potatoes are harvested and shipped to locations around the world. Mr. Potato Head is smiling! Random Thought #2: Two Books….

It is hard to believe but the eastern part of PEI is even more beautiful than the middle and west. We skipped Charlottetown for a future trip and first visited Victoria by the Sea and then arrived at Brudenell River Provincial Park (BRPP), our home for the next three days. For the last three nights we have stayed at the Twin Shores Camping Area on PEI’s Darnley Point. We are one of a few campers in a campground of over 700 sites (I am sure this place is rocking in the summer). We have a magnificent view of Darnley Basin and the Atlantic Ocean and enjoyed walking the beach (reminded us of days walking the Martha’s Vineyard beaches). Sunday we traveled into the center of New Brunswick and spent Monday and Tuesday at Mount Carleton Provincial Park (MCPP). We were at least 90 minutes driving from any civilization. The Park was beautiful and we were there with five other RVs and a group of college-aged campers. We took two long bike rides over very bumpy terrain. One was a loop around beautiful Nictau Lake and the second landed us in a great lunch spot with a spectacular view…

We left Jackson and the sun was starting to shine. By the time we reached Crawford Notch, the rains were back. It rained all the way to the ferry across Lake Champlain. But when we arrived at our rental on the New York side, the sun was shining. Good college pals Bill Harley and Debbie Block arrived soon after and we enjoyed sharing a dinner meal and catching up.
