Canadian Thanksgiving

Canadian Thanksgiving

We arrived in Halifax on Saturday, October 8th and staid with Melinda’s cousin Jack Crowley (Melinda’s dad Ed’s nephew) and his wife Marian. They live right next door to Dalhousie University where they both worked. Back 10 years or so ago I did work with the DU Continuing Education Department. Our hosts treated us like royalty with an amazing fish chowder, an in-depth tour of Halifax (we ended the tour at a local club where Jack keeps his sailboat), and…

More Fun In Fundy

More Fun In Fundy

We staid an extra day at the Fundy Woods Campground. We wanted more time to explore the Fundy Trail Parkway. This time we drove Stargazer and stopped at outlooks and Interpretive Centres, as well as hiking a five-mile trail past a waterfall to a breathtaking outlook. The trail started off easy, but soon we were climbing down steep stairs and crossing rivers multiple times. Melinda did great and Otto of course pushed us to go further and faster. The following…

A Mari Usque Ad Mare (From Sea to Sea)

A Mari Usque Ad Mare (From Sea to Sea)

We are having a spectacular time in Canada. The weather is perfect and the views incredible. The Fundy Woods Campground & Cottages overlooks the Bay of Fundy and this morning Otto and I watched the sun rise as we hiked to St. Martin’s. With tourist season over, it is quiet, but thankfully Octopus Ice Cream is still open! Yesterday we biked from our Campground to the Fundy Trail Parkway and via the backwoods trail traveled to the Interpretive Centre and…

Old Friends & Good Times

Old Friends & Good Times

The Acadia Seashore Camping & Cabins Campground was quite spectacular. The weather during our two days was perfect; although 39 degrees the first morning. Stargazer was parked right by the water and we could sit by our fire and look out on Cadillac Mountain. We met lots of wonderful people including two couples who have sold their homes and are traveling the country. Susan Malkin and Jay Kelly joined us in their RV, Harvey. They were the friends who motivated…

Acadia, Deer & So Much More

Acadia, Deer & So Much More

We had an easy trip from Jackson to Acadia National Park. BUT prior to leaving (the day before) due to a beeping propane alert, we learned that our batteries were at 4 percent and needed to be replaced. The Gorham RV Doctor was a lifesaver. On the way to ANP Stargazer shook off rust and was a RV Star! For the first two nights we staid at the ANP Seawall Campground in Southwest Harbor. No electric or water, but a…

Heading to Halifax

Heading to Halifax

Stargazer heads back out on the road on Saturday, October 1st and will return to Jackson on Saturday, October 15th. Melinda, Otto and I will be heading up the Maine Coast (connecting with Jay Kelly and Susan Malkin along the way), then entering Canada and visiting Melinda’s cousin Jack in Halifax for Canadian Thanksgiving, and subsequently back to Jackson via Baxter State Park in Maine. We have been busy since the Westport Book Fair. I went trekking in Scotland for…

Quaker Book Fair a Success

Quaker Book Fair a Success

On Sunday Stargazer rolled out of Westport, Massachusetts with a smile and a RV full of great memories. Between Saturday and Sunday, the Westport Monthly Meeting 59th Annual Book Fair generated just under $40,000 in sales and the Book Sale is open until next Sunday. The record is slightly over $50,000. Monies are used to support the Meeting’s operations, as well as local nonprofit organizations. Congratulations to Gretchen Baker-Smith, the Book Fair Clerk, and all the Meeting members, attenders and…

Dear Mitch

Dear Mitch

I wrote the following Letter to the Editor to the Conway Sun. Dear Mitch McConnell I have no expectation that you and I will ever see eye to eye on most issues. Abortion. Gun control. Immigration. You get it; the list goes on and on. But the issue where I don’t understand your unwillingness to act is climate change. Believing that climate change is not real is the true “Big Lie”. Forget about stealing an election, you are stealing the…

Big Book Sale in Westport, MA

Big Book Sale in Westport, MA

For many years Melinda and I worked with all our Westport Monthly Meeting Quaker friends on an Annual Book Fair. During our last year, 2019, we raised over $50,000 selling 35,000+ books, CDs, DVDs, albums and puzzles. A significant percentage of the money raised is used to support local non-profit organizations providing critical services to the greater-Westport area. We moved full-time to Jackson in November 2019 and the plan was to finish Book Sale Transition Training in 2020 and then…

Patriot or Citizen

Patriot or Citizen

Our Stargazer Spring 2022 Trip was a grand success. We had a terrific time visiting friends and family, as well as many memorable US locations. Melinda, Otto and I were so fortunate to be able to spend time exploring and learning. Some specific memories include: the amazing park rangers, their parks, and what they taught us, all the Dollar Stores we passed and the disappearance of so many family businesses, realizing how short a time homo sapiens have been on…
